About this course

This Medication Awareness course is aimed at anyone who administers medication as part of their job. This could be nurses, first aiders, care home staff etc.

Figures show that hundreds of deaths each year in the UK are linked to medication errors. It is therefore vital that all health and social care staff are provided with the knowledge and skills required to support individuals with their medications.

This course looks at the roles and responsibilities of individuals for administering, storing, disposing and recording information about the use of medicines, it also looks the legislative requirements, as well as self-medication and any other issues which may arise in the administration of medication. The training also covers the requirements of confidentiality and the rights of clients.

What you’ll learn

Keep up to date with current legislation and understand the procedures they must follow.

Safely administer medicines, including supporting self-administration, whilst being mindful of local policy, consent, and confidentiality.

Recognise different types of medication and the common side effects associated with those.

Promote the rights of the individual when managing medication, including those who lack capacity.

Understand the use of monitored dosage systems.

Have an awareness of how an individual’s metabolism may affect the absorption and elimination of medicines.

Understand how to store and dispose of any medication safely.

Understand the recording and reporting procedures and requirements.
