About this course

Karen Reid, chief executive of the Care Inspectorate said: “Protecting people who are at risk of harm is everyone’s concern”.

We couldn’t agree more with that statement. We believe that each adult has the fundamental right to live a fulfilling life; free from harm and neglect. This can be achieved when people and organisations work together to prevent and stop harm and help to promote well-being while ensuring the individuals’ views, wishes, feelings, and beliefs are being considered.

Our Adult Support and Protection* course was designed to provide up-to-date safeguarding training for the regulated health and social care workforce. This includes those who are likely to encounter adults at risk of harm and neglect in their role. This could be in a number of different settings i.e. in a patient’s own home, in a hospital setting, or in a residential care home.

We encourage attendees to consider ways in which they can protect adults at risk by looking at the current legislation, regulations, policies, procedures and how they apply to their role and organization and what course of action to take if there’s suspicion of harm.

What you’ll learn

Have gained a good understanding of the key safeguarding principles of the current legislation, including the Adults Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 and the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000, to name a few.

Have an understanding of the terms ‘Power of Attorney’ and ‘Guardianship’.

Understand what harm and neglect are and the definition of an ‘adult at risk’

Have established a good knowledge of safeguarding duties and responsibilities for individuals and organisations.

Have gained the ability to recognize signs and symptoms of harm, which may indicate that an adult is either being harmed or at risk of harm.

Know how to respond to concerns, allegations, and disclosures and report appropriately if harm is suspected as well as understanding how to share sensitive information.
