About this course

Urinary catheterisation is a medical procedure used to drain and collect urine from the bladder and is a key aspect of nursing care. We are regularly asked to provide a course for this. As such, we have devised various catheterisation courses which will help familiarise delegates with core elements of each, the reasons for catheterisation, as well providing a safe environment for practical sessions.

This training session will cover theoretical elements such as risks of infection, anatomy, procedures, and record-keeping as well as all practical elements relating to catheterisation. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice their skills with a simulated model.

The session will be conducted by one of our expert clinical trainers, who is a nurse with an abundance of clinical and complex care experience and knowledge. Learners will be observed and evaluated throughout the day.

This clinical course follows the quality standards on urinary catheters, produced by The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the catheter care guidelines for nurses produced by The Royal College of Nursing to ensure healthcare professionals provide a high standard of care to patients.

Explain the role of urinary catheterisation in urinary tract infection..

Describe and recognise the signs and symptoms of a urinary tract infection.

Discuss and ensure understanding of routing catheter care for both service users and staff.

Identify the equipment needed for female urinary catheterisation to take place.

Describe and demonstrate the correct technique for insertion and aftercare of a female urinary catheter in relation to legislation, policies and best practice, including gaining consent,

 Keep an accurate medical record.
